ABOUT
The U.S. National Music Education Center (NMEC), incorporated in 1970, is a professional organization representing approximately 6,300 members throughout the state. For more than four decades, NMEC has been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in music education.
Its mission is to advance the value of music study and music-making within society while supporting the professional growth, career development, and standards of practice of music educators.
The U.S. National Music Education Center is recognized as a regional professional association within the field of music education. Through its established review and evaluation framework, NMEC supports accreditation and quality assurance processes for public and private schools, colleges, and universities within the state.
The accrediting activities of NMEC are carried out through three Commissions, each responsible for serving a distinct segment of the educational community. These Commissions operate in accordance with documented policies and procedures to ensure consistency, objectivity, and adherence to established quality standards.

The Accrediting Music Class for Schools
Scope of Accreditation
NMEC accreditation applies to all schools below the collegiate level, including elementary, junior high, middle, high, and adult schools, whether public, private, or church-affiliated.
Accreditation Philosophy and Standards
The NMEC accreditation process promotes excellence in elementary, secondary, and adult education by encouraging continuous institutional improvement. Accreditation by NMEC recognizes schools that demonstrate compliance with established, research-based NMEC standards and that meet an acceptable level of educational quality.
Accreditation Status Framework
NMEC has adopted a revised approach to granting accreditation status. Emphasis is placed on accreditation status rather than fixed accreditation terms, reflecting a commitment to supporting sustained, high-quality learning for all students while addressing each institution’s unique improvement priorities.
The NMEC Accreditation Status Explanation outlines the criteria and procedures governing accreditation determinations. It includes the updated evaluation ballot utilized by Visiting Committees, as well as detailed descriptions of the available accreditation status categories.

The Accrediting Music Class for Community and Junior Colleges
Accreditation is a voluntary system of self-regulation established to evaluate overall educational quality and institutional effectiveness.
The accreditation process provides assurance to the public that accredited member institutions meet established Standards; that the education provided by these institutions is of demonstrable value to the students who earn it; and that employers, trade and professional licensing bodies, as well as other colleges and universities, may recognize and accept the credentials awarded as legitimate and credible.
The Accrediting Music Class for Senior Colleges and Universities
Voluntary, non-governmental institutional accreditation, as practiced by NMEC and other regional commissions, is a distinctive feature of the American higher education system. In many other countries, the maintenance of educational standards is primarily a governmental responsibility.
Although no institution in the United States is required to seek accreditation, the recognized benefits of accredited status have led most eligible institutions—both within this region and nationwide—to pursue and maintain accreditation.
The NMEC accreditation process supports educational institutions in developing, implementing, and sustaining effective academic programs. It provides assurance to the educational community, the general public, and relevant organizations that an accredited institution has met established standards of quality, integrity, and institutional effectiveness.
The Commission accredits institutions as a whole rather than individual academic programs. Accordingly, in addition to evaluating academic quality and educational outcomes, the Commission places significant emphasis on institutional governance, organizational structures, administrative processes, financial stability, and educational resources to ensure long-term institutional effectiveness.

EMCA National Music Examination
The U.S. National Music Education Center also administers the EMCA National Music Examination, which is designed to provide students with recognized artistic credentials that may support their university applications. This program has demonstrated strong effectiveness and has been introduced in numerous countries and regions worldwide.
The EMCA Music Merit Examination serves as a professional platform for young music teachers, students, and music enthusiasts. The impartiality and professional integrity of the EMCA evaluation process are supported by distinguished adjudicators affiliated with international music competition organizations.
The EMCA Music Merit Examination system establishes rigorous standards for the many teachers and students who are awarded the EMCA Music Certificate. Earning this certificate represents a meaningful personal accomplishment and a mark of artistic distinction.
The primary purpose of EMCA, however, extends beyond simply passing an examination. Greater emphasis is placed on the learning process, artistic growth, and the experience of participating in the graded music assessment. Candidates benefit from valuable opportunities to engage with accomplished musicians and to receive professional evaluation that supports their continued musical development.
We believe that through participation in EMCA, young musicians gain not only artistic advancement, but also lasting inspiration, meaningful musical experiences, and treasured memories that will remain with them throughout their lives.
